For writers, students, and people who fill notebooks

You love your notebook.
But you cannot search it.

Ideas you write by hand stay on the page. You cannot find that note you wrote two months ago, so you either stop writing by hand or you keep writing and lose the notes.

Now you can.

handwritten.md turns photos of your pages into clean Obsidian markdown. Drawings are saved as images, math equations are preserved, and your formatting stays intact. Your notebook stays the original. Your vault becomes searchable, linkable, and yours.

Why handwritten.md

Built for your phone.

No install, and no setup. Take a photo, and get a file.

Keeps what matters.

Drawings, diagrams, math equations, and tables. All converted or embedded. Nothing lost.

Your notes stay yours.

We process your images in memory and delete them within 60 minutes. We do not keep your journal, so we cannot read it.

How it works

Three steps. Most jobs finish in under a minute.

  1. 1

    Take photos of your pages

Open handwritten.md on your phone. Tap "new" and use your camera, or pick existing scans or PDFs.

  2. 2

We transcribe the text, drawings, and math

We read each page. Drawings become image attachments, math equations are preserved, and your formatting stays intact.

  3. 3

Download a folder ready for Obsidian

Get a single markdown file, or a zip with attachments. Drop it into your vault. Links between notes are already set up.

What ends up in your vault

Handwriting to markdown

Headings, bold, italics, and bullets are kept the way you wrote them.

Math equations preserved

Inline and full-line equations show up correctly in Obsidian.

Drawings saved as images

We crop diagrams from the page and embed them in your notes.

PDFs supported

Upload scanned notebooks. Every page is processed at the same time.

Lists, tables, and checkboxes

Tasks become checkboxes you can tick. Tables stay tidy.

Dark mode, built for mobile

Designed for thumbs. Follows your system theme.

Simple, capped pricing

Frequently asked

How accurate is the transcription?

Very, for clear handwriting. We use advanced AI built for messy human handwriting. When a word is uncertain, we wrap our best guess in [?like-this?] and highlight it in the editor, so you can fix it in two taps. We don't paraphrase or 'improve' your writing.

What handwriting styles work best?

Both clean print and cursive transcribe well. Mixed styles, rushed notes, crossed-out lines, and arrows all work. Anything you can read with effort, we can usually read too. Photos taken in good light at a flat angle give the best results.

What happens to my photos after processing?

They are deleted within 60 minutes. We process images in memory, write them to a per-job temporary folder, and a scheduled purge erases everything once the job is done, successful or not. We never store the photo or the transcribed markdown long-term.

Can I use this without Obsidian?

Yes. The output is plain Markdown with an optional metadata block at the top. It works in Notion, Logseq, VS Code, Bear, iA Writer, or just a text editor. We optimise for Obsidian (wikilinks, callouts, embedded images) but you can switch to standard Markdown links in settings.

How does billing work?

Subscriptions are monthly or yearly via Stripe. Yearly saves you two months. Your monthly page allowance resets on your billing date. We accept all major cards plus Apple Pay and Google Pay. Stripe handles taxes automatically.

What if I go over my page limit?

On Personal and Heavy, additional pages cost $0.10 each, capped at $20 a month on Personal and $50 a month on Heavy, so you can never get a surprise bill. We'll email you at 80% and 100% of your allowance. The Free trial has a hard stop at 10 pages.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. One click in settings opens the Stripe customer portal. Cancel, change plan, update payment, or download invoices. Your subscription continues until the end of the period you already paid for, no clawback.

Do you support languages other than English?

English is officially supported and tested. We handle common European languages reasonably well in our experiments, but we will not promise quality outside English yet. If your handwriting is in another language, the free trial is the safest way to check.

Can I use this on my desktop?

Yes. The app is fully responsive. We design mobile-first because most people photograph their notebooks with a phone, but uploading existing scans or PDFs from a laptop works just as well.

Your first 10 pages are free, and you do not need a card. Most uploads finish in under a minute.
