Trusted by analog writers, students, and knowledge workers
You love your notebook.
But you can't search it.
Every great idea you write by hand stays trapped on the page. You can't grep your way back to that thing you scribbled on a train two months ago. So you stop writing by hand. Or you keep writing and accept the loss.
Now you can.
handwritten.md turns photos of your pages into clean Obsidian markdown — drawings extracted, math rendered as LaTeX, formatting preserved. Your handwriting stays the source of truth. Your digital vault becomes searchable, linkable, and yours.
Why handwritten.md
Built for your phone.
No install. No API keys. No setup. Take a photo, get a file. That's it.
Preserves what matters.
Drawings, diagrams, math equations, tables — all converted or embedded. Nothing lost.
Your notes stay yours.
Images processed in memory, purged within 60 minutes. We can't read your journal because we don't keep it.
How it works
Three steps. Most jobs finish in under a minute.

We transcribe text, extract drawings, detect math
Gemini reads each page. Drawings become PNG attachments, equations become LaTeX, formatting is preserved.
- 3
Download a ready-to-use Obsidian folder
Get a single .md file or a .zip with attachments. Drop it in your vault — wikilinks already wired up.

Frequently asked
How accurate is the transcription?
Very, for clear handwriting. We use Google Gemini 3.1 Flash-Lite, which is currently best-in-class for messy human handwriting. When a word is uncertain, we wrap our best guess in [?like-this?] and highlight it in the editor — you can fix it in two taps. We don't paraphrase or 'improve' your writing.
What handwriting styles work best?
Both clean print and cursive transcribe well. Mixed styles, rushed notes, crossed-out lines and arrows all work — anything you can read with effort, the model can usually read too. Photos taken in good light at a flat angle give the best results.
What happens to my photos after processing?
They are deleted within 60 minutes. We process images in memory, write them to a per-job temporary folder, and a scheduled purge erases everything once the job is done — successful or not. We never store the photo or the transcribed markdown long-term.
Can I use this without Obsidian?
Yes. The output is plain Markdown with optional YAML frontmatter — it works in Notion, Logseq, VS Code, Bear, iA Writer, or just a text editor. We optimise for Obsidian (wikilinks, callouts, embedded images) but you can switch to standard Markdown links in settings.
How does billing work?
Subscriptions are monthly or yearly via Stripe. Yearly saves you two months. Your monthly page allowance resets on your billing date. We accept all major cards plus Apple Pay and Google Pay. Stripe handles taxes automatically.
What if I go over my page limit?
On Personal and Heavy, additional pages cost $0.10 each, capped at $20/mo (Personal) or $50/mo (Heavy) so you can never get a surprise bill. We'll email you at 80% and 100% of your allowance. The Free trial has a hard stop at 10 pages.
Can I cancel anytime?
Yes. One click in settings opens the Stripe customer portal — cancel, change plan, update payment, or download invoices. Your subscription continues until the end of the period you already paid for, no clawback.
Do you support languages other than English?
English is officially supported and tested. The model handles common European languages reasonably well in our experiments, but we will not promise quality outside English yet. If your handwriting is in another language, the free trial is the safest way to check.
Can I use this on my desktop?
Absolutely — the app is fully responsive. We design mobile-first because most people photograph their notebooks with a phone, but uploading existing scans or PDFs from a laptop works just as well.
